I have to admit that sometimes, in this job, you can really wonder why you are here. Sometimes clients are unwilling to take necessary steps, and you feel like your words are falling on deaf ears, even though I have been through some struggles of my own and speak from experience. But every once in a while, a day comes along that impresses on my heart what I know in my head.

I attended my first birth this month as a labor support person. Since she moved in, I have watched this young lady grow and change as a person. We have spent many hours talking about school, work, other people in her world, and the events that led up to her pregnancy as well as what she planned to do with her life afterwards. Her love and concern for her unborn child was always evident. I assumed that I would have my usual role of sending her off with someone that would walk through this experience with her, and I would greet her at the residence and fuss over her and the baby when she returned. Towards the end of her pregnancy, I knew that she was unsure about who would go with her into the delivery room. Her world had changed so much with this baby. There were very few people left to help her through this last mile of the road.

As a mother myself, I knew it would be impossible for me to send her into that room alone, knowing what would lie ahead. So I went with her. I talked when she wanted to talk, gave her my hand when she reached for it, and quietly cheered her on. There were moments when she told me that she wanted to go home, couldn’t do it anymore, and " please take the baby out". I could see how tired and scared she was and there was a look on her face that I had never seen before, but she still closed her eyes again and pushed….

After 21 hours of labour, her very healthy and stunningly beautiful daughter was born. I’m sure it was one of the few times in my adult life that I jumped up and down! I think she would have too, if she were able. I know that I am bonded to this young lady and her daughter in a very important way and I will always think of her. I also know that through this experience, I was able to convince her that we do care, and of the sincerity of our words.

What I didn’t expect is how much of a blessing this experience was for me as well. Since then, I have thought about this experience from a million different angles but what sticks out in my mind is how lucky I am to work in a place where miracles happen all the time, and where young women will move mountains for their children. I am confident that this young woman will move forward with her life and that her future is bright, and that we have all had a hand in it. That is why we are here.
